Fall Fair Float August 11, 2006 With so much history to celebrate it was hard to know what to put on the float. In the end it was a delightful mix of programs past and present, with salutes to Community Gardens, E-Growth, BizKids and much more. This was a wonderful way to start off the celebrations for the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre's 20th Anniversary.
20th Anniversary Celebration Open House and Tea September 12, 2006
Founding Director, Mac Taylor and Former School District #59 Supervisor, Charlie Parslow, were guest speakers along with Sandy McDowell, Chairman of the South Peace Enterprise Centre Board. Mr. Taylor spoke eloquently on the beginnings of the centre and his original vision to help prepare students to become employers instead of employees, and how the centre has promoted business and entrepreneurship over the years. His dream was that every community that supported an arena would support an enterprise centre. He compared ‘learning the game of hockey by playing hockey’ with ‘learning the game of business by doing business’; the former contributing to the physical health, the latter to the economic health of the community. Mr. Parslow is a staunch believer in the important and integral role the enterprise centre plays in our community’s economic wellbeing. He applauded the centre’s contributions over the last two decades and called upon the audience to recognise how, even as we enjoy an economic upturn in our region, the centre’s programs, resources and expertise are vitally important to both the economic and social health of our community. He praised long standing partners, the Kiwanis Club, the City of Dawson Creek , and School District #59 for their support, and stressed the need to forge new partnerships as people and organizations have changed and evolved over the years. The task of running a successful community enterprise centre ultimately falls to more than management and staff. It is the responsibility of all community leaders who are interested in business and economic growth. Mr. McDowell, long-time Chairman of the South Peace Enterprise Society, the board which oversees the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre, spoke simply and earnestly about the commitment involved in keeping an organization such as KEC on track and a viable, productive part of the community. He attributed much of the centre’s success over the last few years to Manager, Doris Brocke , praising her dedication, imagination and hard work. The event ended on a lighter note as two entrepreneurs, graduates of the centre’s “Millionaire Club” program, surprised Ms. Brocke with roses and a singing telegram. After cutting a twentieth anniversary cake, guests enjoyed refreshments and visited with the speakers and staff. A great deal of the talk was about past programs and projects, but there was a feeling of anticipation as well, and a buzz about current and future programs. The consensus was that the Kiwanis Enterprise Centre would surely continue to offer innovative and community minded initiatives for many years to come.
The Kiwanis Enterprise Centre 20th Anniversary Celebration Entrepreneurial Fair Sept 23, 2006. Sudeten Hall, Dawson Creek, BC This event was a great success. The Sudeten Hall was filled with tables manned by entrepreneurs of all types and sizes. There were entrepreneurs from the non profit sector, the private sector, the entertainment community and corporate sector. Burgers, made from beef donated by local producers, were barbequed by volunteers from the Kiwanis Club of Dawson Creek and given away to attendees. Local performers donated their times and talents to provide a four hour program of entertainment. An estimated 100 participants (volunteers, entrepreneurs, entertainers) and approximately 300 attendees were a part of the celebrations.
Here are the four winners of the MC McFlea Colouring Contest! Members of the Kiwanis Club of Dawson Creek had a hard time choosing from the many entries in this contest. But we're sure you'll agree that these entries are all top notch. These talented artists have each been awarded a twenty dollar gift certificate to the Northern Toy Box. Perhaps they'll stock up on crayons!
On December 19th, we hosted a Christmas Open House/ potluck which was very well attended and enjoyed. After a morning of singing Christmas Carols and a Pot Luck Lunch we adjourned to the Computer Lab for "Christmas and Computers". Our participants discovered dozens of Christmas websites for recipes, crafts, stories, games and much more!
On January 11th representatives from many Non Profit Organizations attended "Social Enterprise", an orientation session sponsored by the Enterprise Centre in partnership with LIRN BC , SPARC BC , Canadian Rural Partnerships, BC Rural Network, Service Canada and Enterprising Non Profits.
David LePage, program manager of "enp" (enterprising non profits) facilitated this all day session. This orientation workshop was the first step to applying for funding from enp and normally costs $200 to attend. However through this partnership it was offered to local Non Profit Organizations free of charge.
